GNSS-Seismology Doctorate defended by Iwona Kudłacik
16-11-2023
On October 26, 2023, the Scientific Council of the Discipline of Civil Engineering, Geodesy, and Transportation at the Wrocław University of Environmental and Life Sciences awarded the doctoral degree to Iwona Kudłacik based on her doctoral thesis titled "Research on natural and anthropogenic seismicity with high-frequency GNSS observations." The thesis was supervised by Dr. Jan Kapłon, Assoc. Prof. (UPWr), and Dr. Grzegorz Lizurek, Assoc. Prof. (IGF PAN). The doctoral work consists of a series of four scientific publications in which the candidate presented procedures for analyzing high-rate GNSS time series to detect low-magnitude anthropogenic earthquakes. The application of such data for mining-induced seismic events extends the current applications of GNSS seismology, which primarily involve monitoring large natural earthquakes or bridge vibrations.
Iwona Kudłacik is involved in the EPOS-PL, EPOS-PL+, and GATHERS projects, and since 2019, she has been collaborating with Professor Mattia Crespi and his team at Sapienza University of Rome, where she completed two internships.
Both the Reviewers and the Scientific Council of the Discipline highly complimented the scientific achievements of the doctoral candidate, awarding her thesis with honors. Congratulations!

2nd GATHERS Summer school - Netherlands
17-10-2023
The highly anticipated GATHERS Summer School 2023, hosted by the Department of Geoscience and Remote Sensing at Delft University of Technology (TUDelft), has officially concluded. Running from August 28th to September 1st, this event brought together an international cohort of young enthusiasts eager to delve into the realms of geodetic and imaging techniques for Earths surface monitoring and seismic risk assessment.

Building upon the success of the first edition held in Wroclaw, Poland, in 2022, the GATHERS Summer School in Delft, the Netherlands, continued its mission to educate and inspire the next generation of geoscientists. The week-long program combined theoretical and practical knowledge, focusing on three primary Earth observation methods central to the GATHERS project:
● Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR)
● Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR)
● Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) seismology

Unlocking the secrets GNSS Satellite Orbits: the breakthroughs behind IGS Repro3 for ITRF2020
06-10-2023

In our study, we describe the quality of GNSS satellite orbits provided by individual analysis centres and combination orbits provided by the International GNSS Service Analysis Centre (IGS ACC) coordinator at Geoscience Australia. The quality of the combined orbit products has been verified using satellite laser observations. On this basis, we discussed the current developments and challenges in modelling GNSS orbits and summarised the GNSS community open issues in mulit-GNSS combination orbits.

Successful GATHERS Internships in TU Delft
25-08-2023
The first half of 2023 was very fruitful for the UPWr SpaceOS Remote sensing team, part of the Institute of Geodesy and Geoinformatics at UPWr, in the view of enhancing international collaboration with one of the leading European Universities. Within the frames of the Horizon 2020 project GATHERS, three internships have been accomplished at the project’s partner headquarters at the Technical University of Delft (TU Delft), Netherlands. Dr Kamila Pawłuszek-Filipiak, the PhD student Natalia Wielgocka and the student in the Master’s program “Geodesy and Cartography” Michalina Paszek, had the chance to work with the prominent scientists prof. Ramon Hanssen and Dr Freek van Leijen and their team from the Department of Geoscience and Remote sensing at TU Delft.
